We present three eastward-expanding auroral surge (EEAS) events that were observed intermittently at intervals of about 15 min in the post-midnight sector (01:55–02:40 MLT) by all-sky imagers and magnetometers in northern Europe. It was deduced that each surge occurred just after each onset of a multiple-onset substorm, which was small-scale and did not clearly expand westward, because they were ...
    • High-latitude crochet: Solar-flare-induced magnetic disturbance independent from low-latitude crochet

Yamauchi, Masatoshi; Johnsen, Magnar Gullikstad; Enell, Carl-Fredrik; Tjulin, Anders; Willer, Anna; Sormakov, Dmitry A. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-11-03)
A solar-flare-induced, high-latitude (peak at 70–75∘ geographic latitude – GGlat) ionospheric current system was studied. Right after the X9.3 flare on 6 September 2017, magnetic stations at 68–77∘ GGlat near local noon detected northward geomagnetic deviations (ΔB) for more than 3 h, with peak amplitudes of >200 nT without any accompanying substorm activities. From its location, ...
    • Ionospheric Response Observed by EISCAT During the 6–8 September 2017 Space Weather Event: Overview

Yamauchi, M; Sergiengko, Timothy; Enell, Carl-Fredrik; Schillings, A.; Slapak, R.; Johnsen, Magnar Gullikstad; Tjulin, A.; Nilsson, H. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-09-03)
We present ionospheric plasma conditions observed by the EISCAT radars in Tromsø and on Svalbard, covering 68°–81° geomagnetic latitude, during 6–8 September 2017. This is a period when X2.2 and X9.3 X‐ray flares occurred, two interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) arrived at the Earth accompanied by enhancements of MeV‐range energetic particle flux in both the solar wind (SEP event) and inner ...

Following the 38th Annual European Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods in Siuntio in Finland, an intercalibration workshop for optical low light calibration sources was held in Sodankylä, Finland. The main purpose of this workshop was to provide a comparable scale for absolute measurements of aurora and airglow. All sources brought to the intercalibration workshop were compared to the ...

The Antarctic and Arctic regions are Earth's open windows to outer space. They provide unique opportunities for investigating the troposphere–thermosphere–ionosphere–plasmasphere system at high latitudes, which is not as well understood as the mid- and low-latitude regions mainly due to the paucity of experimental observations. In addition, different neutral and ionised atmospheric layers at high ...
